I may be a Southern Californian now, but I spent 25 of my formative years in cold weather climates in the midwest and upper northeast, so I understand what makes a comfortable and cozy sweater. After years of experimenting/sometimes wasting my money with different fits and materials, I have finally settled on a few things I search out when adding to my cold weather collection.
I like something is a little roomy, so I can add a layer on more humid days and also have room to breathe (and not sweat!), especially when transitioning from cold outdoors to heated interiors. I also cannot do itchy materials. If my sweater material requires a layer of protection from all skin contact, it’s a no. I need a sweater that can also be used as a snuggly blanket. There are sweaters we reach for immediately, and there are sweaters that give us the hives at the mere thought of them.
And the final consideration when purchasing the softest of sweaters: I am a sucker for an interesting pattern or fit. Typically, I’m adding a sweater to a plain or basic pant, so I want the sweater to be doing most of the aesthetic work.
Check out the list below for future beloved wardrobe essentials, priced from $25.99 to $260, that you will be reaching for again and again.
Mongolian Cashmere Cardigan
While not the most exciting prospect, a comfy oversized cardigan is, however, a staple that belongs in every comfort-seeker’s wardrobe. Buy it now, thank me later/every day of your life (because you will never want to take this one off). Don’t have time to think about what to wear? This over the top of a T-shirt and jeans, add some minimalist jewelry and a baseball cap, and you are on your way.
This one from Quince is buttery soft and very popular. Seriously, I know people who will not stop talking about how much they love this cardigan. It comes in 11 complimentary colors in XS – XL and also has a 1X – 3X option in three neutral shades.
Autumn Winter Striped Turtleneck
I already have three sweaters with this striped print in various color combinations, and none of them fail to immediately add an upscale flare to my look, will so very little effort from me. It’s become a go-to especially when I’m feeling a little bit unkept. Pair with some cute black jeans or leggings, grab a mini handle bag, and you will have unlocked effortless style.
Jumper No67
I’ve been wanting a babaà sweater ever since TikTok started targeting me with the Spanish brand’s comfy cozy beauties some months ago. The algorithm, she is all knowing. I love the brand’s loose, raw look – especially in this cobalt blue color. The No67 is has a saddle sleeve and is made with local Spanish wool. It has a timeless look, but not that itchy vintage feel. Their sweaters look like they hug you with their thick yarn. They are oversized, yet somehow sculpt the body. Also, babaà cares about animals. The local sheep providing this wool have been treated with care. The sweaters can cost up to $295, but you are paying for quality that will last. You will hand these down – a rarity these days.
Merino Fair Isle Sweater
I love a Fair Isle Sweater, especially one featuring a vintage après-ski style graphic print. This chunky merino wool knit jumper also comes in a fun Olive Green and will keep you warm and cozy on the coldest days. While the Fair Isle style is trending right now, you can be confident that yours will never go out of style. It’s gorgeous on everyone. In a similar way a lace or ruffle collar flatters, a Fair Isle pattern also beautifully draws attention to the face.
Dokotoo Turtleneck Sweater
A cable-knit sweater with a whole lot of slouch? Yes, please. This VERY popular sweater comes in 14 colors, size S-XXL, and pretty sure looks great on everyone, if the reviews are to be believed. Pair this with your favorite jeans or leggings for the easiest outfit ever.
L.L. Bean Fisherman Sweater
A classic. L.L. Bean sweater is a go to for comfort-wear. They’ve been in the game since 1912. The Fisherman Sweater is a staple. But I will always recommend checking out the Men’s sweater section. They will provide you that enveloping oversized fit, and, infuriatingly, sometimes men’s clothes will have better material and construction. My faves: the men’s Fisherman Sweater, the Classic Ragg Wool, and Norwegian Crewneck (currently on sale!).
