It’s officially time to put away the fleece, the layers of sweaters, and your favorite puffer jacket and welcome back the workhorse that is the winter coat. If you’re like me and haven’t bought a winter coat in ages, here are the picks I’ve been drooling over, as well as style, price point, and material considerations. I’ve rounded up the coziest winter coats from quality brands like Mackage, COS, and The Frankie Shop, and many other dependable, fashion-forward brands.
A few things to keep in mind when selecting a winter coat!
- Your Winter Weather: do you live in a climate where insulation is an absolute must? Or do you live somewhere you’re never quite sure what month it is because seasons are more of a suggestion? You’re going to have to know when to prioritize protection from cold and when to prioritize, perhaps, a silhouette that allows for layering.
- Your Personal Style: do you love a dramatic look? Rock a lot of polkadots? Or do you prefer a more classic or preppy look? Or are you on the minimalist luxury bandwagon (same)? Whatever style you love, make sure your coat reflects it. It’s an investment. You want to make sure you love this wardrobe staple you will be wearing almost every time you go outside this season.
- Quality Materials: always always always look at the materials tag. If you are working with a budget, we need to be strategic about what the coats are for. How thin is the coat? Is there a lining? Are the pockets actually utilitarian. If a coat is less than 50% wool, do not pay good money for it. It most likely contains a lot of synthetics. Have you noticed a lot of shedding of the material? Bad. Turn things over, like the buttons. Are they fully covered? Are the seems ripping apart?
- Versatility: simply, will you be able to wear this coat with all, or at least most of, your wardrobe? Will a sweater fit under it? Will you feel good wearing this coat to work and drinks later?
Belted
Wear the belt. Don’t wear the belt. You’re getting a two for one with this option. A beautiful belted wool coat is sophisticated and feminine and will elevate any outfit.
Oversized Wool
Want a coat that will fit over anything and give you PRESENCE while still being cozy? This is the one. I’m loving the hourglass shape right now. I have a feeling this will be ever next winter. Look for offerings in wool and wool/cashmere blends if your winters are colder.
Down Puffer
Who knew staying this warm could look this street style chic? These puffy down coats will keep any wind from getting past their insulated barriers.
Checked
For a timeless look that will transition to Fall cold weather wear, a plaid or houndstooth will never let you down.
Soft
Luxe and cozy, soft coats aren’t going anywhere. Instead of the ubiquitous Teddy, try a leopard print or a shearling style to brighten those winter doldrums.
